Gracie Allen (1895-1964) was an American comedian, actress, and singer. She was born in San Francisco, California, and began her career in vaudeville as part of a comedy duo with her husband, George Burns. Together, they performed on stage and radio, and eventually transitioned to television with the long-running sitcom “The Burns and Allen Show” (1950-1958).
Allen was known for her comedic timing and delivery, as well as her character’s scatterbrained, non-sequitur style of speaking. She played the role of a wacky, yet lovable, wife and partner to Burns’ straight man. The show was a huge success and ran for over a decade.
In addition to her work on the Burns and Allen Show, Allen also appeared in films such as “College Holiday” (1936) and “Here Comes Cookie” (1935), and made guest appearances on other television shows.
Throughout her career, Allen was also a philanthropist, she and her husband George Burns supported various charities and causes.
Gracie Allen retired from show business in 1958, but her comedic legacy lived on through her performances and the many comedians who sought to emulate her style. She died in 1964 in Los Angeles, California.
